Pay how you want — why we built Vroom Valet without a payment gate

Most booking apps force a card on signup. We didn't. Here is why, and how our payment model actually works.

By Vroom Valet Team

Most booking platforms ask for a card before you can do anything useful. We think that's the wrong call for a car wash marketplace in South Africa.

The reality of how South Africans pay

Cash is not a fallback here. For millions of people, cash is the primary payment method — by preference, by habit, and by the structure of daily life. The same goes for car wash operators. Many run entirely on cash. Many have a Speedpoint machine. Almost none started with online payments.

Building a marketplace that requires Paystack to function means building for a minority of the market from day one. We were not interested in doing that.

Three ways to pay

Vroom Valet supports three payment modes. The operator decides which ones apply to their wash.

Cash at collection. The most common mode in South Africa. You book, you get washed, you pay the operator directly when you collect the car. Vroom Valet never touches the money.

Card at the till. The operator's own Speedpoint or card machine. You swipe at the end, the same way you would at any other business. Again, Vroom Valet is not involved in the transaction.

Online via Paystack. Where operators have enabled it, you can pay upfront in the app. Paystack processes the payment and routes the operator's share directly to their bank account.

No card required to sign up

You can create a Vroom Valet account, book a wash, and pay in cash without ever entering a card number. The card field does not exist on the signup screen. It appears only if you choose to pay online.

This is a deliberate choice. The hardest part of building a marketplace is getting the first customer through the door. Putting a payment form between "download the app" and "book a wash" is a door we chose not to build.

How we make money

Our platform revenue comes from two places.

Operator subscriptions. Car wash operators pay a monthly fee to list their wash on Vroom Valet. The Starter tier covers cash and card-at-till operators. The Growth tier adds Paystack integration.

Transaction take-rate. On Paystack-routed transactions, we take a small platform fee. This only applies when the operator has chosen to enable online payment. Cash and card-at-till operators pay nothing beyond their subscription.

We can only collect a take-rate on transactions we are part of. Cash and card-at-till keep the operator's full revenue. That is also deliberate — it means we only make more money when online payment genuinely works for operators, not by forcing it.
